The information age has transformed our lives and given us so many opportunities, particularly on the internet: everything from shopping to social networking. But it's also created a vast amount of data about us and about our lives. Now, the EU's Data Protection Directive is the main regulation which governs the use of this data.
The outcome of the recent EU summit on the fiscal compact treaty was the focus of MEPs' attention at this week's plenary session of the European Parliament in Brussels. The EU's future relations with the so-called BRICS bloc of countries and other emerging powers came under the spotlight, and Parliament voted on a report outlining the European dimension of sport.
The cost for calls by mobile phone while abroad, so-called roaming, has been subject to EU regulation for five years and text messages were included in the regulation three years ago. The present regulation will soon expire and right now there are discussions in Parliament on future regulation which would also include data roaming.
Meeting of EPP Group's Chairman Joseph Daul with Jane Holl Lute, Deputy Secretary of the US Department of Homeland Security, and US Ambassador to the EU, William Kennard. The meeting was focused on PNR (Passenger Name Record) and the current status of the negotiation in order the European Parliament to adopt the new agreement which was initialled by European Union and the United States.
MEPs want to renew limits on roaming charges for mobile phone calls and internet, and cut them further by more than half. They are deeper cuts than the European Commission is calling for, requiring the Parliament and Commission to negotiate a compromise.
Millions of Europeans work as volunteers, helping fellow citizens from churches to crèches, from schools to social centres. The EPP Group has held a hearing this week in Brussels looking at ways to engage young people in volunteering – while, at the same time, giving them the skills and confidence to confront the most unfavourable youth labour market in a generation.
There will be a debate in Parliament in Strasbourg on the feasibility of introducing eurobonds next week, when MEPs will also question Catherine Ashton on the EU's policy on Syria, discuss proposals for a revision of the food aid programme disputed by several Member States and debate proposals for allocating more radio spectrum (frequencies) to mobile broadband.
Tourism is the EU's third largest socioeconomic activity accounting for 10% of the GDP and 12% of total employment figures. The quality of infrastructure transport services and information varies widely from place to place as well as between EU Member States. But travel, holidays, leisure and sports during the holidays for people with disabilities is unpredictable, difficult or sometimes even impossible. The public hearing organised in Brussels dealt with this issue.
Hundreds of people have died as a consequence of the recent extremely cold weather across Europe. MEPs have renewed their calls for the European Commission to develop a strategy to address homelessness in Europe. Meanwhile, the Parliament has ensured the continuation of a 25-year-old programme to distribute food to the poorest and most vulnerable citizens in the Union.
A round-up from the European Parliament in Strasbourg, including the latest development in the debate about how to restore growth and jobs to Europe; renewed efforts to assist homeless people; uncertainty about the long-term future of the EU's food aid scheme; and exciting new technological possibilities through freeing up the digital spectrum.
